Mutharika lands African leadership award

Malawi President Peter Mutharika has received the African leadership award in New York from the African Leadership Magazine Group, recognising the Malawi leader as ‘one of Africa’s most distinguished thought leaders and champions of the masses’.

In a long Facebook post, Mutharika expressed his  elation over the award.

” I am filled with deep humility as I stand before the high honour which you confer upon me today. You have honoured me, my country, and all Malawians. Malawi is a small country in the southern eastern part of Africa. But today, you have given us a stubborn belief that something worthy the attention of the world is happening in that small African country.” he wrote.

According to Mutharika, the award pushes him towards fight for social justice. He says he has kept believing that poverty is a great injustice against humanity in Africa and elsewhere. Poverty is an injustice to be fought.

”I have been humbled because you have seen and commended the people-centred programmes of my Government.”

The Malawi leader then recounted the life he spent in the opposition making memories of how he got arrested for a feared treason following the death of his brother President Bingu wa Mutharika before Joyce Banda took over the reins of power.

The award comes just two months after the Malawi leader landed other global recognitions as well. The University of Addis Ababa in July 2016 honored Mutharika with an Honorary Degree of Human Letters (Honoris Causa) for his outstanding contribution to academics globally.

The African Leadership Magazine awards recognize and reward leaders for their ability to steer their businesses through turbulent times, apply the best of business modules to manage, and keep their missions afloat.

’’Over 20 categories recognize the achievements made by selected high profile corporate business leaders in Africa and honour their great contributions towards the country’s post-recession economic development. All these fine exemplary leaders will be mentioned of their impeccable leadership qualities deeming it fit into nation building,’’ a description about the awards after an internet entry reads.
