A 43 year-old pastor has died while a 16 other people have suffered injuries after a lorry overturned while the driver was urinating in Mangochi district on Monday, Malawi24 can report.
The pastor has been identified as Chigumuzi Ngwira of Emmanuel Church in Nkhatabay.
According to Mangochi Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Amina Daudi, the pastor and the other 16 people were travelling to Mangochi town in a lorry registration number CA 375-857 and when they reached Saiti village along Mangochi-Makanjira road the driver left the vehicle to urinate.
But while the driver, Ronald Ali, was urinating, the vehicle started moving backwards and hit a nearside embankment of the road where it overturned.
The pastor sustained serious injuries following the impact and she died while receiving treatment at Lugola Health Centre.
Other sixteen passengers also sustained injuries.
The driver is currently in police custody and he will appear in court soon to answer the charge of causing death by reckless driving which is contrary to section 126(4c) of Road Traffic Act.
The deceased hailed from Luwawe village, Traditional Authority Bowoya in Nkhatabay district.
Meanwhile, Police in Mangochi are urging drivers to always be careful while on the road and to observe road signs as well as obeying rules and regulations of the road traffic to avoid road accidents.
This accident follows several others lately in Malawi.
