The Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture has advised government to start plans for the 2016/2017 growing season in order to mitigate effects of adverse weather conditions and prevent another food crisis.

This is coming at a time when millions of people in the country do not have food due to floods and droughts that hindered food production in many areas during the 2015/16 agriculture season.

Recently, the United Nations (UN) disclosed that Malawi is again at risk from another weather phenomenon, LA Nina, in the 2016/17 rainy season which threatens to destroy the country’s investments such as infrastructure and crops.

But it has been observed by the committee that government is not doing enough to make sure that even when there are adverse weather conditions, there should be no food crisis in the country.

The committee’s Chairperson Joseph Chidanti Malunga said there is need to take advice from experts so that the country realises food sufficiency.

“There is need for government to start preparing for the next farming season so that we solve problems facing Malawians in terms of hunger,” said Malunga.

He added that listening to the country’s weather experts is important if the country is to manage to produce more food in the next agriculture season.

Malunga further said that government should invest more in implementing strategies that will ensure that the country has enough food all the time.
