Man locked up for stealing K1.6m

The Midima court in Blantyre has sentenced a 49 year-old man to eight and a half years in prison for stealing from his boss.

According to police, the convict identified as Mr. Ishmael was sent to deposit K1 million and K600,000 on 5 September and 9 September 2016 respectively at Limbe First Merchant Bank.

However, Ishmael did not deposit the money on both occasions and instead he stole it.

On 14 September, the boss was told by bank officials that his account did not receive any money on the two dates.

arrestedAfter follow ups, the convict was taken to police where he admitted to have stolen the money amounting to K1.6 million.

In court, he pleaded guilty to charges of theft by servant contrary to section 286 of the penal code.

The presiding magistrate Mangawa Makhalira on 16 September slapped Ishmael with an eight and a half year custodial sentence to deter would be offenders.

Ishmael hails from Dzimbiri village, T/A Talasi in Mangochi district.

In a related development, police officers in Limbe have recovered property suspected to have been stolen.

Confirming on the development, Limbe assistant Public Relations Officer Widson Nhlane said they were tipped by well-wishers that 46 year-old George Black was keeping assorted items in his house in Madudira in Machinjiri Township.

“On 12 September 2016, the CID officers went to Black’s house where after searching they found assorted items,” he explained.

According to Nhlane, the items that the security providers recovered include four laptops, a large speaker, one CPU, two hard drives and four mixers.

The police arrested Black after he failed to explain where he took the items.

The suspect will be taken to court to answer charges of being found in possession of property suspected to have been stolen.
