Two in jail over condolence money

Police at Ulongwe police unit in Balaka are keeping in custody two men for collecting condolence money from people of Ulongwe Township after falsely claiming that there was a funeral in the area.

According to Balaka Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Gerald Sumaili, the two were going door to door in Kalembo village collecting money from villagers after claiming that a man called John Wasili from the same village had died.

“Some members of the community grew suspicious over the news and tried to follow up the claim after which they discovered that the two were lying,” said Sumaili.

The matter was reported to Ulongwe police unit who arrested the two and charged them with obtaining money by false pretence 

Meanwhile the suspects are in police custody and they will appear in court soon where they will answer charge of obtaining money by false pretence which is contrary to section 319 of the penal code.

Maliki Dickson and Lonard Banda hail from the area of Traditional Authority Kalembo in Balaka district.
