K18m realised from Carlsberg finals

The Carlsberg Cup final between Mighty Wanderers and Silver Strikers last Saturday raised 18 million Kwacha from gate collections, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has disclosed.

According to a press release by FAM general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda, a total of 9.5 million kwacha was made from sell of tickets while 8.5 million kwacha was collected on the match day.

FAM however gave sponsors Carlsberg 1000 tickets out of 15,000 open tickets produced. This was part of the contractual agreement with the sponsors who used the tickets for promotional activities.

Out of the total sum of the money collected, 3.5 million kwacha was given to finalists Mighty Be Forward Wanderers and Silver Strikers while stadium owners pocketed 25 percent of the total gate collections.

On its part, FAM got 2.8 million kwacha while K707,590 was given to national council of sports. Other beneficiaries were the police and Malawi Defence Force who got 1.6 million kwacha.

Meanwhile, the governing body has hailed football fans and all stakeholders for ensuring that the match was played according to schedule.

“FAM is also congratulating Mighty Be Forward Wanderers FC for defending the cup,” also reads part of the statement.

The Carlsberg Cup final was played at Kamuzu stadium in Blantyre and ended 5-4 on post-match penalties with the Lali Lubani boys carrying the day.
