Fatal accident claims life in Karonga

While the country is still mourning the death of 15 citizens who died in a fatal car accident near Ekwendeni, another road accident has claimed a life at Chiweta in Karonga district.

Police have identified the victim as Mr Lihaka who was traveling in a National Bus registration number BQ 4500.

According to Mzuzu police, the accident occurred on 11th September 2016 at around 4:30pm.

The bus which was being driven by John Justin Banda, 58, from Mkawa village, T/A Mlumbe, Zomba district was coming from Mzuzu heading to Karonga with sixty five passengers on board.

Upon arrival in Chiweta escarpments near Chiweta trading centre, the driver failed to negotiate a right bend due to speed.

As a result the vehicle hit a nearside embankment and overturned several times on the road before hitting an oncoming motor vehicle.

The other vehicle was a Scania Van which was being driven by Juma Jalali, 46, from Buguluni village Dares- salaam, Tanzania.

Following the impact, Mr Lihaka died on the spot due to head injuries while seven other passengers escaped with minor injuries.

Both drivers were not hurt. The bus got extensively damaged while the van had its front nearside part bent.
