The in-form Flames and Bidvest Wits forward has revealed the reason why he switched his national team jersey number from 17 to 11.

Gabadinho Mhango says he has always been obsessed with the number 17 jersey ever since he started his career at Brave Warriors but his meeting with Flames veteran striker Esau Kanyenda left him with no choice but to inherit the number 11 which was once used by the Polokwane City FC striker during his playing days with the national team.

Gaba:Kanyenda inspired me

“I like jersey number 17 but when I met Esau Kanyenda, everything changed. He trusted me with the number 11 jersey that was used by him during his playing days with the Flames.
“Thank you Esau ‘Black Mamba’ Kanyenda for believing in me and for motivating me. I grew up hearing lots about him and to play with him it is just grace,” the player posted on his Instagram account.
Mhango was a thorn in the flesh to Swaziland National Team players last week during the final 2017 Afcon qualifier in which Malawi won 1-0 courtesy of Gerald Phiri Jnr’s stunning free kick to finish the campaign with five points.

Gaba’s current form with Wits saw him claiming the man of the match award after he helped his side beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in the opening Absa Premiership match.

  1. Mwana iwe that number belongs to Banete Gondwe not Kanyenda. Kunali anthu kunja kuno iwe usanabadwe. So that’s good to get hold of that number you may remind us of the legends Banete Gondwe the real user of that number.
