Hit and run driver kills teen, injures 3

A 14 year-old boy has died while three other people have suffered injuries after being hit by a driver who fled the scene in Mangochi district.

Mangochi Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Amina Tepani Daudi identified the deceased as Madalitso Isaac.

She said the hit and run driver was coming from the direction of Police lines earth road heading to Soko trading centre in the district.

Upon arrival at Mwalandilidwa Resthouse the driver lost control due to overspending and the car swerved to the nearside verge where it hit four pedestrians who were standing along the road.

road accident“Following the impact the deceased died on the same spot while the other three sustained injuries and were rushed to Mangochi District Hospital,” Said Daudi.

The driver is at large and once apprehended he will answer the charges of failing to report road accident contrary to section 128(4a), failing to render assistance contrary to section 124(c), reckless driving contrary to 126(4c) and causing death by reckless driving contrary to section 141 of Road Traffic Act.

The deceased hailed from Disi village, Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka.

In a related development two fishermen in the same district, are missing at after their boat capsized.

Daudi identified the two as Mavuto Ali, 18, and Kajuwe James, 22, whom together with their fellow fishermen went to fish Usipa in Lake Malawi.

“In the process of fishing heavy winds blew and overturned the victims’ boat,” said Daudi.

People in the area are still searching for the two.

Both missing men come from Chindamba village, Traditional Authority Chowe in Mangochi district.
