Police in Machinga district have arrested a 26 year-old woman for stealing locomotive fuel from trains that pass through the district.
Machinga police publicist Constable Davie Sulumba said the suspect Miriam Goodson was found with 147 containers of 20 litres each and six drums containing 10,000 litres containing stolen locomotive fuel.
Sulumba said the lady along with four men who are also in police custody, pumped the fuel from a train which was coming from Mozambique passing through Nayuchi border in Machinga.
The publicist said police received a tip from the public that Goodson was keeping fuel in her house and upon searching the house, police officers found 147 containers and six drums containing 4,000 litres of the locomotive diesel in her house.
The law enforcers arrested Goodson together with Roderick Kalulu, 34, who was nabbed for pumping the diesel from the trains.
Overstone Musambale, 44, Elias Keyadi and Fabiano Khoman were also arrested for carrying the stolen 147 cans to Goodson’s house where the fuel was being kept waiting for the day to be sold.
Musambale, Keyadi, and Khomani will answer charges of aiding theft contrary which is contrary to Section 278 of the Penal Code.
Sulumba said the three are still in police custody while Goodson was granted bail because she has a baby.
The female suspect will answer charges of being found with stolen properties contrary to Section 329 of the Penal code while Kalulu who pumped the locomotive fuel from the train will answer theft charges.
Goodson comes from Michongwe village, T/A Kawinga at Ntaja in Machinga while Kalulu and Musambane comes from Mpirinjala village, Sub T/A Mchinguza in Machinga whereas Khomani comes from Bimbi village, T/A Kuntumanji in Zomba.
