The Word Bank is financing a project which aims at distributing textbooks to primary schools in the country in order to reduce one of the major problems affecting the education sector.

As part of the project, about 27 million textbooks will be given to primary school students across the country.

Malawi Economic Justice Network (MEJN) executive director Dalitso Kubalasa whose organisation is involved in the project said they initially conducted research in the schools to find out the number of textbooks which will be needed in targeted schools.

Kubalasa added that so far they have found that some schools are preparing their lessons for next term without using even a single textbook.

According to him, the findings have also showed that the country’s primary schools teachers do not have textbooks a situation which forces them to borrow books from other teachers.

“We are very concerned with the current situation but we believe that this will come to an end,” he explained.

Kubalasa further said some institutions which have begun benefiting from the program expressed surprised at being considered since they assumed that they are not on the ministry of education’s register.

The project is expected to reach 12 million pupils in 60 primary schools in the country’s 12 districts.

  3. Many thanks to the World Bank for the books.Quality education is vital to the sastainable development of the country everywhere.Besides, I also ask all well wishers to help with some pacels of food in schools since a hungry learner can not listen to the teacher.

  4. Donors ,NGO, parents/guidarn and private sectors are doing their part. So what is the goverment doing to embrace education. Are we expecting donors to bring teachers as well? Text books without teacher will never meet our manifesto to give our kids a basic right to education.
