The Malawi national football team, the Flames’ 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) formality match against Swaziland will be played on September 4, officials have indicated.
The formality match was scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 3.
According to Football Association of Malawi (FAM) General Secretary Suzgo Nyirenda this follows a directive from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
He also revealed that CAF had wanted the match to start at 4:30 local time, but the FA argued that the Kamuzu Stadium does not have flood lights for a mtc to be played in the evening.
“CAF has shifted the match because they want it to be played on the same day with the other Group L last match between Guinea and Zimbabwe. The rule that last matches should be played on same day and same time” Nyirenda is quoted as saying.
Meanwhile a group of 17 local based players started training on Monday at the Chiwembe Technical Centre under the leadership of the newly appointed Flames caretaker mentor Nsanzurwimo Ramadhan.
The Flames are already out the race having lost 3-0 to Zimbabwe in June this year.
The result meant that Zimbabwe qualified for the continental showpiece since the other contenders Guinea were defeated 1-nil to Swaziland.
Swaziland have 8 points while Guinea has 5 points in Group L whereas Malawi remains ‘dead’ at the bottom.
