Malawi Crime: Gearbox thieves get four years

A court in Blantyre has sentenced three people to four years in prison for stealing a gearbox.

Assistant Publication Relations Officer for Limbe police Station Widson Nhlane identified the suspects as 25 year-old Chipiriro Chabwera, Enock Goodson, 19, and Saidi Kananji, 36.

CourtNhlane said on 19 August the three thieves broke into a building belonging to a resident in Mudi and stole the K300,000 gearbox.

“They stole the gearbox of a motor vehicle valued at K300,000 in Limbe Township,” he said.

The thieves were later arrested and charged with theft and burglary.

In court the three pleaded guilty court and presiding senior Resident Mangawa Makhalira convicted and sentenced them to four years imprisonment with hard labour.

Chabwera comes from Ngamwani village Traditional Authority Kapichi in Thyolo district, Goodson comes from Manjomo village in Traditional Authority Nkanda in Mulanje while Kananji comes from Somba village, Traditional Authority Mlumbe Zomba district.
