An 80 year-old man in Dedza has been arrested after he raped a girl under the age of 16. Police spokesperson in the district constable Cassim Manda confirmed the incident and identified the suspect as Layson Jekapu Makaka.
According to Manda, the incident happened around 7pm when the victim and her friends were playing close to the house of the suspect.
At that time the suspect was sleeping but when he heard the voices of young girls, he opened the door and called one of the girls.
When she stepped close to the door the old man suddenly grabbed the victim and pushed her to his bedroom where he forced himself on her.
But as the girl was going out of his house, she was seen by her elder sister who asked her what she was doing in the house of the old man and later told her mother.
Without hesitating, the mother to the victim reported the matter to Linthipe police post and later a medical examination confirmed that the victim had been raped.
Meanwhile the suspect is in Linthipe police custody waiting to answer the charge of defilement contrary to section 138 subsection 1 of penal code.
“Old age is not an excuse in criminal proceedings. If an old man commits an offence he has to be treated as any other person, he would be arrested and taken to court to answer the charge levelled against him.”
“It is up to the court to take into consideration the person’s old age but this will be done after we have already done our job,” said constable Manda. Layison Jekapu Makaka hails from Chapaluka village in the area of Traditional Authority Kaphuka in Dedza.
