Police in Mangochi are keeping in custody a 25 year-old fisherman for raping a 9 year-old girl in the district.
According to Mangochi Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Amina Daudi, the 9 year old victim and her younger sister were sent by their mother to wash plates at Lake Malawi’s Namalaka beach where they found the suspect, Yusuf Kawanga, fishing.
“Few minutes later the suspect took the victim to nearby reeds where he defiled her and gave her some fish before threatening to kill her if she discloses the matter to anyone,” Daudi said.
A few days later the victim started feeling body pains and also having difficulties when walking. When her mother asked what had happened to her, the little girl revealed that she had been raped.
“The woman checked her private parts and found sores and bruises,” Daudi said.
Medical examination conducted at Namalaka Health Centre confirmed that the 9 year-old girl had been sexually abused.
The suspect was arrested and he will appear in court soon to answer the charge of defilement contrary to section 138 (1) of penal code.
Yusuf hails from Mwanjati village, Traditional Authority Namabvi in Mangochi district.
