Police in Malawi’s capital city of Lilongwe are keeping in custody nine people over plan to set fire to Malawi Congress Party (MCP) headquarters.

According to central region police publicist, Ramsey Mshane, the nine – three men and six women – were arrested on Sunday after they had entered the premises in order to carry out the attack.

He said the attack was foiled after MCP received a tip from the general public that the suspects had planned to set the offices on ablaze.

However, the publicist refused to comment much on the development saying he will talk more when the police are over with investigations which they have launched.

According to information made available to this publication, out of the nine suspects five are said to be members of the party.

Commenting on the issue, the party’s deputy secretary general Eisenhower Mkaka said they received a tip from some well wishers that the suspects had that plan on Sunday and they alerted the police.

“Yes, it is true, on Sunday someone told us that there were such plans. They came in the afternoon with a bag of flour and some petrol.

“Now the matter is in the hands of the police so I can’t comment much and I cannot disclose the names of these suspects,” said Mkaka.

MCP is still experiencing in-house wrangles as some officials want the party leadership to call for a convention saying they have lost confidence in Lazarus Chakwera.
