A Sombre mood has engulfed Chanika village in Nkhotakota district following the death of an eight year-old girl who drowned in Kaombe River in the district.
According to Nkhotakota Police Public Relations Officer Sub Inspector Williams Kaponda, the deceased and her sister went to the river to bath.
“In course of bathing they slipped into deep stagnant water and drowned and when people rushed to the river, the young girl was already dead,” said Kaponda.
But the sister of the deceased was found unconscious and was rushed to Nkhotakota District Hospital where she has been admitted and is recovering.
Post-mortem that was conducted confirmed that the death was caused due to suffocation and no foul play is suspected. The deceased hailed from Chanika village, Traditional Authority Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota district.
In another development, a 21 year-old man identified as Mustafa Rashid has committed suicide by hanging himself in Mangochi district.
According to Mangochi Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Amina Daudi, the deceased was an epilepsy patient and was admitted to Mangochi District Hospital before being discharged on 19 August.
“After arriving at his home he seemed alright,” said Daudi. But on Sunday morning Rashid was found dead after he hanged himself in his house.
Post-mortem conducted at Mangochi District Hospital revealed that death was due to suffocation. Mustafa hailed from Mikochi village, Traditional Authority Makanjira in Mangochi district.
