Police in Blantyre have arrested four workers at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QUECH) for stealing a washing machine.
The four, Francis Gwiranani, 52, Philip Malitino, 45, Yohane Kankhuni, 46, and Gerrard Maonde have been arrested following reports that the washing machine was missing at QUECH laundry section.
Confirming to Malawi24, Blantyre Police assistant spokesperson Andrew Mayawo said one of the suspects Gwiranani who works as senior maintenance supervisor cheated the Laundry Master at the hospital that he noted a fault in one of the machines.
“He cheated the head of laundry section that he noted a fault and that it was proper for the machine to be checked, but at night he came with the other three workers and took the machine while the guard was there but he [guard] couldn’t know the names,” said Mayawo.
The four are yet to appear in court to answer charges of theft by public servant contrary to section 283 of the Malawi penal code.
Gwiranani comes from Chikuse village, Traditional Authority (TA) Mpama in Chiradzulu district, Malitino hails from Josamu village, TA Nsomba and Kankhuni comes from Dzungu village, TA Bvumbwe in Blantyr
