Pop star Madonna has launched a global campaign to fundraise funds for the completion of a paediatric surgery and intensive care unit which she is building in Malawi.

The musician launched the campaign on Tuesday, August 16 which was also her birthday. The campaign which will be hosted on online fundraising website Omaze will end on 16 September and later a lucky donor will be chosen to spend time with the singer in Miami.

Madonna has since asked her fans to donate to her charity Raising Malawi foundation in order to help bring happiness and health to children in Malawi.

“Being a Rebel Heart means fighting for what you believe in, with love,” Madonna says. “For my birthday, I’m asking all of my Rebel Hearts to join me in bringing health and happiness to the children of Malawi.”

Apart from building the hospital, Madonna also adopted David Banda and Mercy James from Malawi.

In July, she was in the country together with the two children and they inspected progress on the construction of the unit which is being built at Queens Elizabeth Central Hospital.

“It will have an enormous impact on saving the lives of children,” Madonna said about the hospital. “In addition to raising the quality and availability of health care, we are also preparing for the future by training more Malawian medical staff in specialized paediatric care.”

The new paediatric unit is expected to open early next year and will have three operating rooms dedicated to children’s surgery and a 50-bed ward.
