Road accident claims life of teenager

A 17 year-old boy has died after he was hit by a lorry at Mpwanya area in Mangochi district.

The teenager has been identified as Kassim Enock.

According to Mangochi Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Amina Daudi, a Hyundai 3 tonner, registration number BS 3862 which was being driven by 62 year-old M’bwana Amini hit the boy after the driver lost control when he tried to exchange direction with another vehicle.

“The car was coming from the direction of Liwonde heading to Mangochi Township with empty crates of chicken and when the driver reached at Mpwanya he wanted to exchange direction with another vehicle,” Daudi said.

road accidentHowever, he lost control of the car and it swerved before hitting the boy.

Following the impact, the teenage boy sustained severe internal injuries and died on the same spot.

Meanwhile, the  driver has been arrested and will appear in court soon to answer the charge of causing death due to reckless driving contrary to section 126 (4c) of Road Traffic Act.

Amini hails from Kwipiti village, Traditional Authority Jalasi in Mangochi while the deceased young man hailed from Kapyepye Village, Traditional Authority Chimwala in Mangochi.

In a related incident, police in Ntchisi have arrested a motorcyclist who hit and killed a 30 year-old man before escaping the scene of the accident.

According to Public Relations Officer for Ntchisi Sergeant Gladson M’bumpha, the motorcyclist has been identified as Kondwani Mbewe aged 25 while the victim is Nelson Masulani.

M’bumpha said the accident occurred on Wednesday at Nine miles along Ntchisi-Malomo earth road in Ntchisi.

“What happened is that the motor cyclist was riding a motorcycle from Ntchisi towards Malomo direction and upon arrival at Nine miles he hit a male pedestrian,” said M’bumpha.

The deceased sustained head injuries and died on the spot. The motor cyclist run away after hitting the man but was later arrested by police.

The deceased came from Mphalabungu village T/A Chilooko in Ntchisi district.
