Malawi Police officers are keeping in custody a 25 year-old man for raping and impregnating a young girl in Kasungu district.
The law enforcers say the man claimed to have been in relationship with the 15 year-old victim.
Public Relations Officer Kasungu Police Edna Mzingwitsa identified the suspect as Chancy Banda of Katupa village in the area of Traditional Authority Nthunduwala in the district.
She said Banda established an emotional connection with the girl in order to sexually abuse her. The abuse was revealed after the girl fell pregnant.
“After noticing some changes on the girl, the mother of the girl took her to the hospital where she was confirmed to be pregnant,” Mzingwitsa explained.
When the girl was questioned, she revealed that Banda was responsible for the pregnancy. The mother later reported the matter to Kasungu police station and the suspect was arrested.
Meanwhile, Banda has been charged with defilement contrary to section 138 of the penal code and he will appear in court soon when investigations are completed.
