Zakazaka, Wadabwa fire Nomads into Carlsberg Cup quarter-finals

Defending champions Be Forward Wanderers progressed to the Carlsberg Cup quarter-finals after defeating Kamuzu Barracks 2-0 at Kamuzu Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Luka Milanzi and Alfred Manyozo Jnr replaced Isaac Kaliyati and Rafick Namwera in the starting eleven, with Harry Nyirenda maintaining his position in defence in the absence of Boston Kabango who was on suspension.

Just few minutes into the first half, Peter Wadabwa’s million dollar pass found Jimmy Zakazaka who made no mistake by putting the ball into the back of the net, 1-0.

The visitors who were without Dave Banda, struggled alot as they failed to settle down in the midfield where Wanderers dominated.

In the 17th minute, Wadabwa ran on a through pass, but Barracks defender made a well-timed tackle to stop the troublesome attacker just inside the box.

KB’s first chance came in the 30th minute when Harvey Nkacha rose up in the sky to release a rocket header that hit the woodwork to the disappointment of coach Billy Phambala.

With less than fove minutes to go, Wanderers should have doubled their lead but Lehman Nthala in goals for the visitors made a stunning save to deny Mike Kaziputa from scoring. In the second half, the Nomads continued their dominance in the midfield as Manyozo Jnr and Kaziputa outpaced the visitors in the midfield.

Just few minutes into the half, Zakazaka’s goal from a free kick was turned down by referee Aziz Nyirenda for offside but Kamuzu Barracks failed to make any amends as they continued to play without intent.

Manase Chiyesa was introduced to try to snatch something from the Nomads and it almost paid off when his low drive was cleared by Harry Nyirenda before crossing the goal line. Harvey Nkacha pulled the trigger from the edge of the Nomads box but Richard Chipuwa pushed the ball over the crossbar 12 minutes after the restart.

In the 67nd minute, Zakazaka unleashed a thunderous shot from the right-hand side and the Soldiers were once again saved by Nthala who finger-tipped the ball over the crossbar as Wanderers searched for more goals. The Nomads brought Ibrahim Sadick for Milanzi as they tried to kill off the game with some few minutes to play on the clock.

The hosts sealed the win with another fantastic goal from Wadabwa who headed in from a Sadick’s free kick from the right flank of the Northern goal post, 2-0.

Kamuzu Barracks threw everything into the pitch to try to reduce the affairs but the Nomads stood firm to progress to the quarter-finals of the cup and they will now play Prison United at Zomba Community Centre Ground.
