A vehicle which was overspeeding in Nkhotakota district swerved off the road and overturned, killing a woman and a girl and injuring 20 other people.
Nkhotakota Police Public Relations Officer Williams Kaponda identified the woman as Fatuma Zidadi, 45, and the girl as Hajati Awame, 8.
He said the accident involved a Toyota Dyna with registration number MC 5254 which was being driven by Hamza Hamiss Banda.
According to Kaponda, the vehicle carried 22 women and children who were going to Lilongwe to attend a local women welfare.
When they reached Kapanga village heading to Salima, the driver lost control due to overspeeding and the vehicle veered off the bitumen road. The Toyota Dyna then overturned before resting on its roof.
The woman and the girl were pronounced dead upon arrival at Nkhotakota District Hospital and medical results revealed that they died due to excessive loss of blood.
Among the injured 20 passengers, three sustained serious injuries and were taken to Nkhotakota District Hospital while one passenger was taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital to receive treatment due to internal injuries.
The other 17 passengers sustained minor injuries.
Both the woman and the girl hailed from Chamba 2 Village, Traditional Authority Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota.
