Chiumia under fire! ‘Mutharika is not Malawi’s life President’

Sports Minister Minister of Sports and Culture Grace Chiumia has come under fire for declaring Peter Mutharika, the country’s ‘life president’.

Chiumia  declared Mutharika a life president when she spoke during Mulhakho wa Alhomwe fundraising dinner in Lilongwe on Friday.

But her remarks have not spared her the wrath of Malawians and several organizations.

Readers who commented on the story posted on Malawi24 website on Sunday argued that such remarks would drive Mutharika to be a dictator.

Other readers held to the view that Chiumia might have wanted to strike a political favour from the President. She was one of the few Ministers that did not get moved from their respective Ministries in a recent cabinet reshuffle Mutharika made.

Peter Ngwira wrote: ”We just have few female ministers and see the damage they are doing. Now imagine if we had 10 thinking like this headless chicken, definately a dictator would have been created. Thats the danger and stupidity of having more females in decision making positions. They support blindly”.

Some others however said that the ‘life President tag’ does not befit Mutharika’s regime owing to the current economic woes and hard decisions the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government has opted for.

They said the tag only befitted the late Hastings Kamuzu Banda reign.

Ken C Chapotela wrote ”Kamuzu was fit to be the life president he did everything for malawians even the house which your boss is sleeping its for Kamuzu u must withdraw that words its waste of time to see him pretending like president yet he is not malawians are going to force him out before 2019”.

Meanwhile, the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) has described Chiumia’s sentiments as retrogressive and creating dictatorship.
