The Malawi Union of the Blind (MUB) has applauded various stakeholders who have helped the union make life better for visually impaired people by making it easier for them to access information.
Recently the union established an information centre where people who are blind are able to find information in braille.
Executive Director for MUB Ezekiel Kumwenda said the union has received support from various organisations as well as government to help the centre.
Kumwenda said since the establishment of the centre, lives of some visually impaired people have improved but they still need more support.
”At the moment visually impaired people are able to find information in braille which is a good development,” said Kumwenda.
He added that the American Embassy through USAID has given the centre primary school books for Standard 1 to 3 which are in braille.
He further said that the ministry of education and National Aids Commission have also come in with support.
Kumwenda however disclosed that they still need support to publish more books in braille so that visually impaired people should access information.
Over the past few years, MUB has been lobbying government to ratify the Marrakesh VIP treaty in order to improve access to information for visually impaired persons.
The treaty will enable countries to share books that are in braille form and will encourage leaders to make such books accessible to the blind.
