A 32 year-old sand miner has died after a rock fell on her while she was extracting sand at Khama area in Machinjiri Township in Blantyre city, Malawi24 can report.
Deputy Public Relations Officer for Limbe Police Pedzesai Zembeneko has confirmed the incident to Malawi24. He said the woman, Juliana Mandala, left her house around 6am to extract sand but a big rock fell on her while she was working.
“She collapsed and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival,” he said.
Meanwhile the dead body is at QUECH mortuary pending for post-mortem.
Mandala comes from Mazunda village in the area of Traditional Authority Mkanda in Mulanje district.
In another development, Police in Limbe are looking for criminals who attacked and wounded an Admarc security guard at the company’s regional office in Bangwe.
Zembeneko told Malawi24 that the robbers carried out the attack in order to steal a gun from the guard.
However the guard, 52 year-old Connex Rabson, was vigilant and brave enough to fight the attackers.
“In course of tussling over the gun he was stabbed on the left thigh,” said Zembeneko.
At that point, the guard shouted for help but fellow guards came when the thugs had already fled the scene.
Meanwhile, the victim has been taken to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital for treatment.
Rabson comes from Shuga village, Traditional Authority Chikumbu in Mulanje District.
