The police have recently faced criticism for torturing Chancellor College students but government through its spokesperson Patricia Kaliati has applauded the officers for being professional during the anti-fees hike demonstrations.

In a statement, Kaliati thanked the police for being professional during the demonstrations organized by students and some Civil Society Organizations (CSO’s) in the country.

Kaliati: Mutharika is happy

“Government also wishes to commend the members of the Malawi Police Service who were in action on Thursday for demonstrating yet again that we have a professional police service that has undertaken to respect the right of the people to demonstrate.

“This is the kind of police service that His Excellency the President would like to see,” reads part of the statement.

Kaliati also applauded President Peter Mutharika for having an audience with students from public universities on the fees hike matter.

The Malawi police came under fire for beating female students and some students with disabilities, a development that laid bare the brutality of the law enforcers in the country when they are handling different cases.

    1. Protest is part of yo rights as long it is peacefuly. But in Malawi even it can be peacefuly the president just send police to bomb tear gases. What happen to Kalindo. It was turned politicaly. I think we must have a police unit called intervetion unit. Instead of the goverment to interveen the situation. They send police to harras innocent citizens. Hope when voting he wil send same police to beat pple to vote for him. Otherwise rigging plan must start now. Police and Army are there to protect citizens and enforce law. But in Malawi are used to silence ordinary pple.

  9. Hitting and slapping young girls is very professional indeed. Police are trained to brutilse citizens. No wonder we had 20 killed in July 2012. Anyone who glees at that video showing a young girl crying and being slapped must be a brutal.
