Malawi mob justice continues : Machinjiri residents kill sugarcane thief

A 32 year-old man has been beaten to death by an angry mob after he was caught stealing sugarcane in Machinjiri Township in Blantyre.

Deputy Public Relations Officer for Limbe Police Pedzesai Zembeneko has confirmed the incident and he identified the deceased as Lameck Chibwana of Machinjiri. According to Zembeneko, on Tuesday.

Chibwana went to steal sugarcane at one of the gardens within Khukuteni village in Machinjiri.

However he was spotted by the garden owner who was also in the garden at the time.

“Upon seeing the garden owner, Chibwana started to run away but the gardener shouted for help. The villagers flocked in and arrested the suspected thief,” he said.

The community members agreed to take the thief to Mzedi Police Unit but on the way they began beating him until he died.

Meanwhile the dead body is at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital for post-mortem.

Lameck Chibwana hailed from Khukuteni village, Traditional Authority Machinjiri in Blantyre.
