Police in Blantyre city have arrested a woman for being found with 14 bags of Indian hemp locally known as “Chamba”.
The woman, Eliza Mitumbu aged 33, was keeping the bags of the hemp at a construction site situated at Chapima heights in Blantyre.
Confirming to Malawi24, Blantyre police deputy spokesperson Andrew Mayawo said well-wishers tipped the police about the illegal stuff that was kept in a building being constructed at Chapima heights in Chirimba Township.
“Actually we got a tip from people around Chapima that a woman was keeping bags of Chamba. We were told that they are 12 bags but when we went there we found two more,” said Mayawo.
The police have since sent the marijuana to Bvumbwe research station as part of the process of the trial.
Mitumbu hails from Kika village, Traditional Authority (TA) Mulumbe in Zomba city and she is yet to appear in court to answer the charge of illegally possessing illicit drugs.
