MCP fights for poor Unima students

The Opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has advised authorities to make sure that students in the country are able to access public universities arguing that there is need to approach the fees hike issue with sober minds.

The development comes at a time when students from University of Malawi (Unima) have refused to accept the fees hike in the public universities in the country.

Speaking on the local press, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila said her party stands on helping needy students who cannot afford to pay the new fees in the country’s universities.

“Our interest is that university education should be made accessible to needy students. What we are against is that the fees structure that has been announced will eliminate poor students, all stakeholders need to sit down and look into the matter so that no one should withdraw from school due to fees,” said Kabwila.

Meanwhile University of Malawi council is set to hold a one day meeting with all stakeholders in the education sector in Lilongwe on Tuesday to discuss the right channels to go by on the fees hike.

But one of the country’s education commentators Benedicto Kondowe has urged the stakeholders to address issues raised by students on the fees matter during the Unima indaba.

Students from Unima have been demonstrating to force the university council to reverse its decision of fees hike.
