Albino killings continue in Malawi: 8 year old girl abducted for ‘sale’

People living with albinism in Malawi continue to be hunted with the latest news involving an eight year old girl who was abducted by a man who worked with the girl’s brother on the plot to sell her bones, Malawi24 understands.

Police in Lilongwe city have arrested a 24-year-old man suspected of plotting to abduct an eight-year-old girl with albinism at Ndevu village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kalolo’s area.

Lilongwe Police Public Relation Officer Inspector Kingsley Dandaula identified the suspect as Alick Moses.

Dandaula told Malawi News Agency (Mana) Wednesday that the suspect initially met a brother (name withheld) to the girl and tried to persuade him to allow him abduct her.

“The suspect was trying to persuade the brother of the girl with albinism to allow him abduct her. This surprised him and he reported the matter to his parents,” he said.

He further said the suspect, on July 20 2016, went to the house of Alinefi Develiaus (34), mother to the children, to follow up on the negotiations with the brother. That is when Develiaus took the matter seriously and later reported to Namitete Police Station.

According to Dandaula, the suspect will appear in court soon to answer charges of causing breach of peace which is contrary to section 181 of the penal code.

Just last week, thugs hacked off the arm of a woman with albinism at her home in Chitipa district.

Recently President Peter Mutharika threatened all beasts who commit crimes against people with albinism that his government will make sure that they are sentenced to life in prison.

But critics have maintained that death sentence is the only fair punishment for albino killers.
