Students from College of Medicine (CoM), a constitute college of University of Malawi (UNIMA) have closed the college until further notice as University council refuses to bulge on its decision to hike fees.
According to a statement by Unima, foundation students were supposed to step on the corridors of the college on 8th August and later to be joined by continuing students on 15th August.
However students from the college have disclosed that they will remain at their homes if the council refuses to reverse the hike that has since attracted controversy.
In a statement signed by College of Medicine Students Union (COMSU) President Francis Makiya, students have vowed not to pay the hiked fees.
“We should all be aware that if College of Medicine opens and some students pay the hiked fees then that’s the end of everything and it means we have bowed down to University council decision and betrayed our brothers and sisters whose future is being shuttered due to hard hit economic time.
“Therefore as college of medicine we should not pay fees and not report for school until further notice,” reads the statement made available to Malawi24.
Meanwhile President Peter Mutharika has disclosed that he is to have an audience with the university council and minister of education on the hiked fees matter.

There must be a unanimous decision of all students. The best is not to report for school when re-open (assuming they will) if fees hike is not reversed. In this way you will starve the government of the little revenue its getting now thereby making it feel the pain. Lets see if there can be university without students. Will it not be another shame, like that of Aniva!
