Students from University of Malawi (Unima) have accused the police of damaging property during the Chancellor College demonstrations arguing that the cops’ acts were ‘senseless’.
The development comes at a time when the University council disclosed that the extent of damage will determine the date of opening the college.
Unima spokesperson Peter Mitunda said earlier on that authorities are assessing the damage of property at the college and they are to open once everything is in place.
However, University of Malawi Students Union (UMSU) leadership has blamed the police for the damage of property during the demonstrations arguing that the law enforcers were not professional in their handling of the matter.
In a statement made available to Malawi24, UMSU leadership has downplayed reports that students burnt hostels at the campus during the protests.
“UMSU dismisses all claims that students at Chancellor College destroyed property belonging to the college, all damages resulted from senseless acts of Police.
“UMSU further expresses its displeasure over false reports that students at Chanco burnt three hostels and broke windows at economics department. The general public should note that the said properties were not damaged in anyway,” reads part of the statement.
The students’ body has since disclosed that it is to take legal action over false reports that they have been funded by politicians to bring confusion in the country by protesting the fees hike.
The leadership also vowed to stand for students who have been reported to have been abused by police officers during the demonstrations.
Now its a time to learn negotiation before violence. I mean peaceful protest.
