‘Forgive me I Am an orphan’ – Beer thief pleads with the court

The Midima second grade magistrate court has sentenced a 20 year-old man to four years imprisonment with hard labour for breaking into a shop and stealing beer despite his asking the court for mercy saying his is an orphan.

According to assistant public relations officer for Limbe police station Widson Nhlane, the convict broke into a shop at Limbe market on 9 July 2016 and stole 15 crates of Chibuku and 55 Jerry canes of five litres each, all valued K116,500.

The police arrested Banda after investigations and he pleaded guilty in court. In mitigation the convict asked the court to exercise leniency when passing judgement as he is an orphan.  

CourtBut presiding magistrate Loyce Chirwa said the convict committed a serious offence and deserves a stiffer punishment to deter would be offenders.

Therefore, the magistrate sentenced Banda to four years imprisonment with hard labour.

The convict hails from Chiwanda village T/A Mabuka in Mulanje district.
