The Liwonde First Grade Magistrate court on Wednesday sentenced a 36 year-old man to seven years in jail for stealing items worth K700,000.

During court hearing, Prosecutor Sub Inspector Ezekiel Kalunga of Liwonde police post told the court that on 14th July 2016 at midnight, the accused broke into the house of Edwin Hauli who stays at Mawira area and stole a LG Plasma TV, LG Radio, DSTV Explorer Decoder, three remote controllers, Two curtains, and DSTV connector, all the items valued at K700,000.

Court“Police managed to arrest the accused and recover all the stolen items from the suspect,” Kalunga told the court.

The police prosecutor asked the court for a stiffer punishment to the convict saying the offence was serious one and that Mawira area is a low density area therefore cases of burglary and theft are rampant.

In mitigation, the convict asked for fair punishment for he is a breadwinner.

Passing Judgement, First Grade Magistrate Esther Phiri concurred with the prosecutor and sentenced Mabedi to seven years imprisonment with hard labour for the offences of burglary and theft which are contrary to section 309 and 278 of the penal code respectively.

Mabedi hails from Wanama Village, Traditional Authority Nkanda in Mulanje district.
