Just in: Mutharika sets free 243 prisoners

News coming through to Malawi24 indicates that Malawi President Peter Mutharika has pardoned 243 prisoners across the country’s prisons.

According to a statement from the the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security this is ”a symbol of forgiveness during this Year’s Republic Celebrations.”

”The prisoners who have been pardoned are those who have served at least half of their prison sentences, with good behavior and were not convicted of serious offences. Some prisoners have been considered for pardon because of their medical conditions.” reads the statement in part.

This comes hot in the heels of fears of continued congestion in Malawi’s prisons.

  66. 243 prisoners, esh ! What is the plan of the President ? Did he already give them something to do ? He is not wrong but he was supposed to see how is he going to helping them, Otherwise those prisoners they are going to troubling other people. Now ,if we can see something wrong with these prisoners, Muthalika is going to be fired up, yeah ! Many Malawian people are well educated, we can even take Mr M. Usi (Manganya) to be the President of the Republic of Malawi. What’s wrong with you Muthalika ? Eee answer me ! Don’t you see that people are dying of hunger ? You are busy realising the prisoners instead of fighting for hunger are you normal ? You luck, because am faraway, Otherwise I was supposed to come there by ur place and shouting you a lot .   86. Welcome to another kind of prison. i hope some of u in few days to come u wil not wish to go back coz of tough life. the good part now is dat u hv de right to dress wat u want, right to good shelter and even freedom of movement but when it comes to food, mmmm u wil wish to go back for sure
