The opposition People’s Party (PP) has expressed fury over the closure of Chancellor College (Chanco), a constituent college of University of Malawi (Unima), following demonstrations against fees hike.

On Monday, students from the college staged protests against Unima council’s decision to hike fees for generic and mature entry students after talks yielded nothing on the matter.

But after running battles between the police and students ensued on Tuesday, Chanco Principal Richard Tambulasi closed the college indefinitely with students being told to vacate the campus.

Speaking in an interview with Malawi24 on Wednesday, PP spokesperson Ken Msonda said government should have considered the opinion of other stakeholders on fees hike.

“The problem is that we have a government that is so arrogant, it doesn’t want to listen to other people’s ideas, the fees is just too much period! If they knew that they were subsidising the fees too much they could have developed a system of hiking the fees but not the way they have done it,” said Msonda.

He further disclosed that Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is set to widen the gap between the poor and the rich arguing that those who are rich can manage to pay the adjusted fees in the public colleges of the country.

“What you must know is that this is a deliberate move by DPP as a party, they want to eliminate the poor by blocking them from accessing high education because they know that students from poor families always make it to the university because they are intelligent,” added Msonda.

The University of Malawi Council indicated that it had hiked the fee contribution that University of Malawi students are supposed to be paying with a minimum set at K400,000 for generic students.

The failure to reverse its decision forced students at Chancellor College, a Constituent College of the University, to stage protests which turned violent.
