The Presidential Cup final between Big Bullets and Moyale Barracks played at Civo Stadium on Saturday only managed to raise a meagre K19.7 million from gate collections, Malawi24 has learnt.
On Saturday, the stadium was filled to capacity as football lovers from across the country came in large numbers to witness a repeat of the 2012 final played at the same venue.
But from the gate takings, the two teams pocketed K4.5 million each, with the other shares going to Sports Council, Football Association of Malawi (FAM), and security.
FAM General Secretary Suzgo Nyirenda attributed the meagre revenue to failure by the stadium management to handle some section of football lovers who made their way into the stadium by climbing Civo Stadium’s fence.
“We had a target of raising K30 million from the match but we only got K19.7 million. This meagre collection was as a result of the stadium’s failure to handle some sections of football fans who made their way into the stadium by climbing the fence,” he said.
However, he was quick to refute rumours that match tickets had run out from the gates.
Masters Security were assigned to man gate collections as well as to provide security but after Bullets’ victory, thousands of the team’s supporters invaded the pitch to celebrate with their players.
Bullets won the cup after beating Moyale Barracks 4-3 on penalties as the regulation time ended 1-all.
