Woman dies, two others injured in road accident

A woman has died after a vehicle that had veered off the road rolled over and hit her as she was walking by the roadside in Nkhotakota district.

The accident which also left two other people injured involved a Scania van with registration number BLK 3748 that was being driven by George Gondwe.

Police have identified the deceased as 45 year-old Grace Kamanga.

According to Nkhotakota police spokesperson Williams Kaponda, the driver was coming from Nkhotakota boma side heading towards Salima with two passengers on board and carried wooden planks in the van.

road accidentWhen the driver reached Mtalanje village, he noticed that in front of him there was a bus that had broken down and as he was trying to divert to the other side of the road he lost control of the vehicle and the car rolled over, hitting Kamanga who was walking by the side of the road.

The woman was taken to Nkhotakota district hospital where her death was confirmed. Medical examinations established that the death was due to internal injuries and suffocation.

One of the two passengers who were in the vehicle sustained a broken right wrist while the other one suffered a ruptured uterus as she was 7 months pregnant. The two are receiving treatment at Nkhotakota district hospital.

The driver escaped unhurt and he has been arrested for causing an accident which is contrary to Road Traffic Act.

Grace Kamanga comes from Mtalanje village, Traditional Authority Mwadzama in Nkhotakota district.
