The ministry of home affairs and internal security in conjunction with the national registration bureau has started registering people in the national identity cards registration campaign.

Confirming the development was the National Registration Bureau spokesperson Norman Fulatira who said the whole registration process will be done three phases.

Fulatira said the first phase which has commenced will target very important people in the country seconded by registration of some civil servants and the final phase will involve the rest of the population (mass registration).

“Well, the first phase of the registration has commenced. In this phase we are registering very important people and here am talking of principal secretaries, government directors and cabinet ministers.”

“Afterwards, the second phase will see people involved in social cash transfer and some other civil servants registering in the second phase then there will be the mass registration,” said Fulatira.

The spokesperson said the second phase of the registration is being expected to register 90, 000 and the third quarter is targeting 9 million Malawians aged between 16 and above.

Fulatira added that the registration is being done free of charge and says no one should pay any money during the registration.

He however said people will be requested to pay a certain amount of money for replacement if the identity card for oneself goes missing.

Important details featuring on the sample of a National identity card include name, date of birth of the holder and the expiry date.
