Malawi burns ivory

As the country is fighting tirelessly to end the ivory trade, on Tuesday the judiciary burned ivory worth K163 million from Liwonde National Park.

Eastern Region Police Public Relations Officer Aetolia Kumanga confirmed the burning of the ivory.

“Ivory worth K163 million from Liwonde National Park has been burnt today at Eastern Region Police Headquarters by judiciary officials,” said Kumanga.

Trading in ivory is controlled in Malawi following the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) that the country ratified.

Malawi is widely considered a weak link in the fight against illegal ivory trade due to graft, weak wildlife legislation, and poor law enforcement.

Ivory is highly sought for jewelery and decorative objects and much of it is smuggled to China and Thailand, where many wealthy shoppers buy ivory trinkets as a sign of financial success.

  7. Imagine 50 ELEPHANTS DIED OF NATURAL CAUSE, what should happen to the IVORY from such elephants?

Conventions have been signed and ratified. Thus, Malawi is bound by such laws. However, once in a while, the purposive approach to statutory interpretation can be adopted. The strict approach may not always be the right way to go.

The ivory in question was in the hands of government (not poacher’s). WHY can’t such ivory be kept in MUSEUMS? People can pay visits and am sure it can generate revenue for the government. Education visit for students can also be meaningful in such museums.

I doubt if the Americans, British, Canadians etc can burn such volumes of ivory.

WHY Don’t we burn the money recovered from CORRUPT PRACTICES??

  8. this is foolish. they are burning dead elephant horns,, which will never bring thEm back to life. instead of finding a way of preserving the living elephants by implying some law or anything to save them. what burning dead elephAnt horns got to do with the living

elephAnts at risk?!they say no matter what never give hope and these smugglers will try again and who knows mybe this time around they mAy succeed

  9. And then nkumapita kumakapempha ndalama kwa azungu…..God gave us things that we can use for survival….Malawi is rich country but irs people are poor in mind.
