‘Its because I am poor’ – MCA student defends himself for stealing at PTC Shop

Victor Owen cites poverty as what moved him to steal.

You just dont have to ask him two times or more on why he went to steal several assorted items at Balaka PTC-Metro Shop on Tuesday, because Victor Owen will only tell you he is poor.

Owen, a 30 year old student studying Financial Accounting at the Malawi College of Accountancy (MCA) in Blantyre was caught having stolen items worthy MK22,075 at the shop.

He stole, various items including Vaseline Body Lotion, tablets of soap, packets of Kamba and milk packets.

According to Balaka Police Publicist Gerlad Sumaili police who were at the Balaka police which is just a stone throw away from the shop chased and caught him.

“He kept most of these items in his jacket he wore and he tried to get out of the shop without paying. The moment he was making his last steps out of the shop,  one of the workers noticed and attempted to stop him.

It was at this point that police from the station chased him and later caught him after they got informed there was that incident at the shop.

Sumaili says Owen also had in possession of a bag he hid at a nearby place-suspected to have been his place of storage for stolen items like those.

Owen who who hails from Chikwatu Village in the Area of Traditional Authority Mwambo in Zomba district was then taken to court.

And in court the student openly said poverty is what moved him to steal so that he could live a ‘cool’ life.

Court is to make state its ruling.
