A court in Ntchisi district has sentenced a 21 year-old man to three years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing maize.
The court heard that on 28 June this year the owner of the maize Noel Nyanda who is a businessman in Ntchisi was coming from Lilongwe where he went to offload his tobacco.
As he was driving towards his house, he saw a man carrying a bag of maize on his heard. Nyanda parked the car at his house, followed the man, and apprehended him.
Upon questioning the thief, the convict revealed that he stole the bag of maize from Nyanda’s house.
The thief further told Nyanda that he has been stealing from him for some time and that in total he has stolen 17 bags of maize weighing 50Kg each plus one 50Kg bag of beans, all valued at K211,250.
The criminal was taken to police and when he appeared in court, he pleaded guilty to the charge of theft.
Considering the amount of bags involved, Her worship Dorothy Kalua sentenced the thief to three years in jail with hard labour.
The convict hails from Njuli village, Traditional Authority Kasakula in Ntchisi district.

“your worship, at this moment maize is a precious commodity and if one has it he is deemed to to be wealth. Therefore stealing such a commodity is a serious offence as it puts the victim at a risk of dying of hunger. The accused person though being a first offender deserves a stiffer punishment to deter some would be offenders”
