Students from University of Malawi (Unima) have denied reports that they are being used by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to protest against fees hike arguing that their demonstrations have nothing to do with any political party in the country.

The development comes after the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) accused the country’s main opposition party of sponsoring Unima students to protest against fees hike.

However, in a statement made available to Malawi24, University of Malawi Students Union (UMSU) says the students are not sponsored by politicians to have the demonstrations but rather poor students who are to suffer due to the hike.

Is MCP behind UNIMA protests? Students say NO.

“The public should note that UMSU council is not a political party and it cannot at all cost associate with any political party in the country, therefore UMSU council would like to warn those who are writing on social media associating it with political parties to stop immediately,” reads part of the statement.

Meanwhile, the students will start boycotting classes on Tuesday, July 12 following government’s response to their petition.

Following a one day meeting held in Mangochi, the students agreed to hold vigils at UNIMA office to force the council of the premier university in Malawi to reverse its decision on the fees hike.

The students will also go to Kamuzu palace in Lilongwe to force President Peter Mutharika to direct the university council to reverse the hike.

UMSU has since appealed to the public to support the vigils in order to help the students.

  3. The issue stems from fee-hike. Someone is just trying to divert people’s attention from the root cause of the matter. I am tempted to say this is cheap propaganda. The government should find a better way to address the problem other than this strategy. for example, the government may discuss the matter with the concerned students and other stakeholders. Recently, this strategy put to rest a similar matter at Mzuzu University.

  4. Leave MCP alone in this issue. When you hiked the fees did you consult MCP? Why do you hate MCP very much after all UNIMA was established during MCP rule.
