Man drowns in Lake Malawi

A 58 year-old man identified as Fred Kamoza Chilema has died after drowning in Lake Malawi in Karonga district.

According to Nkhotakota Police Public Relations Officer Sub Inspector Williams Kaponda, the incident happened in Selemani village, Traditional Authority Mphonde in the district.

He said on Monday Chilema went to the Lake to fish and in the course of that, the canoe he was using capsized and he drowned.

On Wednesday his body was found floating on the water but it was in a decomposed state.

Members of the community reported the incident to the Police and the law enforcers visited the scene.

Medical personnel later conducted a post-mortem which revealed that death was due to suffocation. The Police therefore say they do not suspect any foul play.

Chilema hailed from Nyungwe Village, Traditional Authority Kyungu in Karonga district.
