Prosecutors said Messi and his father defrauded Spain of €4.1m between 2007 and 2009. They also face millions of Euros in fines for using tax havens in Belize and Uruguay to conceal earnings from image rights.

However, neither man is expected to serve time in jail since the Spanish legal system allows convicts to serve probation for prison terms of under two years.

The five time Fifa World Player of the Year was found guilty together with his father of three counts of tax fraud in Wednesday’s ruling by the court in Barcelona.

As well as the jail terms, Messi was fined about €2m and his father €1.5m. They made a voluntary €5m “corrective payment”, equal to the alleged unpaid tax plus interest, in August 2013.

Lionel Messi, who retired from international football last money insisted during trial that he “knew nothing” about the management of his financial affairs which were being managed by his father. The latter blamed their tax consultant.

    2. Take BREAKING: Spanish court sentences Barcelona soccer star Lionel Messi to 21 months in prison, fines him 2 million euros for three tax crimes
As the sentence is short of two years, and neither Lionel nor Jorge have a criminal record, they won’t be required to serve any jail time
Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and his father Jorge have been sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud, but won’t spent any time behind bars.
The Messis were found to have evaded tax on Lionel’s image rights, owing more than €4m in back payments, and the Court of Catalonia has sentenced the pair to just under two years in prison.
However, as the sentence is short of two years, and neither Lionel nor Jorge have a criminal record, they won’t be required to serve any jail time.
Leo Messi had argued that he wasn’t aware of the tax arrangements set in place by his father and other advisors, but the state attorney, Mario Maza, compared the player to a mafia boss, who has deniability on the illegal goings-on in his name, El Periodico notes.

    1. But if you lead the whole story at the end u wil capture that word, the hav had suspended the sentence dnt jast lead koyambirira
