President Peter Mutharika has denied media reports that he ordered Malawians to have grasshoppers for meals due to the hunger situation in the country.

Speaking last week, the Malawi leader urged citizens to be resourceful in their search for food and money, adding that they should not die from hunger when wild animals and insects were there for them to eat.

However speaking during roads inspection in Zomba, Mutharika said he never mentioned Zitete but rather “Zicheche” which is commonly known to be yams in his district of Thyolo.

“I never said Zitete, I said Zicheche, Zicheche in my area can be referred to as Yams not the grasshoppers. People always misquote me, this nonsense must stop,” said Mutharika.

But he was quick to say that rats locally known as “Mbewa” are delicious hence Malawians can have them for meals due to hunger. “Mbewa is delicious, I even had some for my dinner last night,” added Mutharika.

Earlier, Social commentator Felix Unyolo faulted the president’s remark arguing that the hunger crisis in the country should not be regarded as a mere joke.
