Drug Fight Malawi has urged President Peter Mutharika not assent to the recently passed bill on legalising industrial hemp saying there is need for more research on the issue.

Drug Fight Malawi director Nelson Zakeyu said government need to do research on the long term effects of legalising the drug on the country’s youth.

According to Zakeyu, the organisation is concerned that the number of youths who smoke Indian hemp will rise due to misconceptions about the drug.

Zakeyu: Fears there will be a misconception.

“The government need to intervene on the matter because failing to do so will bring problems to the Malawian youths,” he explained.

Zakeyu further urged Mutharika to avoid making a decision based on the current poverty levels in the country but to look at the long term effects on of the legalisation.

He added that government should send officials to other countries which allowed the cultivation of Indian hemp to find out how they are faring.

Zakeyu also suggested that government should school Malawians on the difference between industrial hemp and marijuana saying the effects of the former is minimal.
