Despite Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, George Chaponda giving assurances on availability of staple grain in the country, the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) has expressed doubts over whether the maize will be enough to meet demand.
National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) general manager Nasinuku Saukira said government is providing money for the agency to purchase more maize from neighbouring but was not sure if the maize will be enough considering the huge number of people in need of food aid in the country.
“Right now we are using government funds to buy maize from other countries sharing borders with Malawi, we hope that we will be able to meet the demand,” said Saukira.
However, Chaponda maintained that the country is purchasing enough for the starving population in the country.
“We are buying maize from Zambia and Tanzania, the country is to have another stock from Brazil, our embassy is processing everything,” said Chaponda.
Malawi24 understands government’s assurance on availability of maize has been made to deceive millions of Malawians who are in need of food aid.
Chaponda’s predecessor at the ministry of Agriculture was reported to have stood on a podium assuring Malawians of having enough maize for its citizens.
Later, the true reflection of hunger was revealed but government started blaming vendors for creating the maize crisis.
