Midima senior resident magistrate court has sentenced a 33 year-old man to 15 years imprisonment with hard labour for breaking into three houses and stealing a cellphone.
Deputy public relations officer Pedzesai Zembeneko confirmed the development to Malawi24.
Zembeneko said on June 20 this year, the thief, Gift Joseph, who resides in Bangwe broke into three houses at Laiti village at around 11:00pm.
“He successfully stole one phone and an undisclosed amount of money from two houses but he was caught in a third house,” he said.
In mitigation, Joseph asked for leniency saying that he is the sole breadwinner of his family.
But senior resident magistrate Benedictus Chitsakamile said cases of burglary and theft are rampant, therefore perpetrators need to be isolated from the society.
He therefore slapped him with a 15 year jail sentence to deter the increase of the cases.
Zembeneko hailed the sentence saying it will give the convict time to reform.
Joseph hails from Traditional Authority Mkanda in Mulanje district and he is a repeat offender.
